Cute Ways to Celebrate National Dog Day

August 15, 2020

There’s a pretty special pet holiday around the corner. August 26 is National Dog Day! Our canine friends really do bring a lot of love and laughter to our lives. This is a great time to celebrate Fido’s friendship, love, and loyalty, as well as his adorable quirks. In this article, a Dutchess County, NY vet suggests some things you can do to get your furry buddy’s cute tail going.

Treats

No surprises here: a yummy snack is bound to brighten up your pup’s day. Store-bought treats are fine, but Fido may also enjoy something extra-special. Most types of plain, cooked meat, fish, or poultry is fine, as long as you remove the skin, bones, and fat. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Toys

Toys are both fun and beneficial to Fido. Pick up something new for your pooch! You can go for something classic, like a tennis ball or rope pull. Or, try something more modern, like a mechanical laser pointer or a remote-controlled toy.

Veterinary Appointment

One of the best things you can do for your canine companion is to make sure he’s getting great veterinary care. If Fido hasn’t been in for a while, make an appointment for him.

Bath

Your furry friend would probably nix this one if he could. However, no matter what Fido thinks about bathtime, he will be more comfortable (and huggable) with clean, soft fur. Nail trims and dental care are important, too.

Adventures

Many of our canine pals really love going to new spots, and sniffing unfamiliar grass. Take Fido to a park or trail, and let him enjoy the change of scenery.

New Bed

A comfy bed is definitely one of life’s greatest little luxuries. If Fido’s doggy bed has seen better days, get him a plush new one. (Tip: orthopedic beds are great options for senior dogs and large breeds.)

Yard Pupgrade

Do you have a yard for your pooch to patrol? Make it more pet-friendly by adding a doghouse, sandbox, or even a kiddie pool. It’s also not a bad idea to check for and remove any toxic plants.

Cuddles

Fido is incredibly loyal, and is never happier than when he’s hanging out with his favorite human. Enjoy some quality time with your furry bff!
