5 Purrfect Ways to Keep Your Senior Cat Purring This Year

January 1, 2021

Happy New Yea r! And, to our feline patients, Happy Mew Year. Fluffy will be celebrating her own kitty new year tomorrow, January 2nd. Of course, a year can make a big difference to an older cat. If your furry friend is entering—or already in—her golden years, read on! A Dutchess County, NY vet offers a few helpful tips on keeping a senior furball purring below.

B eds

Senior cats are expert nappers, and can sleep up to 20 hours a day. Make sure Fluffy has a lot of comfy beds. These don’t have to be very fancy. Actually, you can put folded soft blankets in baskets or boxes, and place them in various areas.

Grooming

Older kitties can get stiff and sore. This can make bending and stretching difficult, which may make it hard for your pet to groom her whole body. Brushing your cat regularly will get rid of dead fur and dander, and keep her coat looking and feeling clean and soft. This is also a good way for you to spend time with Fluffy!

Playtime

Did you know that regular play sessions are very good for cats? Try to play with Fluffy every day, even if it’s just for a few minutes. This will help keep your feline buddy in good shape physically. It’s also great for her mind. Timing those pounces and jumps takes a lot of focus. This is very much like the kitty equivalent of doing a crossword puzzle every day. (Plus, it’s cute.)

Lifts

If you see your furball about to jump on or off something, help her out by giving her a gentle lift. Just be very careful when picking Fluffy up or putting her down!

Steps

Your furry buddy will have a hard time jumping and climbing up to her favorite spots and perches. Set out pet ramps or stairs for her.

Snuggles

Cats often get even more affectionate as they grow older. Fluffy may very well want to be petted 24/7! Pay lots of attention to your kitty, and keep that little motor going. You may very well find that your feline friend somehow managers to become even more adorable as she ages!
